Upgrading Your QuickBooks file to QuickBooks 2006

Intuit's Quickbooks 2006 architecture requires a workaround to perform an upgrade on an existing file in a networked environment. This is a one-time procedure, and will not have to be performed an additional time once it has been completed. Please contact us through our toll free support line at 1-877-728-6777 ext. 14 to schedule a tech to be available to work with you through this process.

  1. Log into asp3.itx.net using the remote desktop client. This machine has a special local drive (L:), configured just for the upgrade process.
  2. Copy your QuickBooks file from the Z: drive to this local drive, which has the drive letter L:
  3. Open QuickBooks 2006, and open your QuickBooks 2005 file from the L: drive. You will be prompted to perform the upgrade process. Be sure to store a backup copy of the file on your Z: drive before you perform the upgrade, in case there is a problem with the upgrade and you have to restore the original file.
  4. At this point, the upgrade process will perform automatically. This should not take more than 10 minutes for an average sized file.
  5. When the upgrade completes, open the file from the L: drive. Check in the File menu that the file is in Single-User mode. The option to "Switch to Multi-User Mode" should be available. Please do not select this option!
  6. Once the upgrade has been performed, copy the file back to your Z: drive. Right-click on the file, select "Properties", uncheck the "Read only" box and click "OK".
  7. At this point, you will need to coordinate with ITX to perform the final step in the upgrade process, which attaches the file to the Z: drive's location and ensures that the file will work in Multi-User mode permanently. Once an ITX tech has "tagged" the file on the Z: drive, you can open the file and switch to Multi- User mode, as the upgrade is complete.
  8. IMPORTANT -- Please be sure to delete the files from the L: drive when you are complete! This drive is for temporary use only and you should not leave data on it.
